The Eurostat figures are on the occasion of May 20, which is also celebrated as World Bee Day.

At the same time, Bulgaria imported about 12 tonnes of honey from non-EU countries and 3.5 tonnes from EU countries, European statistics show.

According to the Chairman of the United Bulgarian Beekeepers Union Eng. Mihail Mihailov, Bulgaria is an important exporter of quality honey to Germany, Austria, Italy, France, USA, Norway, etc., and recently Bulgaria has been exporting honey to Middle East countries (excluding Turkey). The market share of Bulgarian exports to the EU is about 1 percent, but we compensate for this with quality production, said Eng. Mihailov.

A problem facing the industry is the lack of a Bulgarian brand of honey, with which the native beekeepers can impose themselves on European markets, said Eng. Mihailov.

According to him, there is also a serious problem with bee mortality in the last month due to spraying of agricultural areas with pesticides – in some areas of northern Bulgaria and in the region of Gotse Delchev, southwestern Bulgaria, there is registered almost 100 percent bee mortality, with an average of 10 percent for an individual apiary, according to the expert.

According to Eurostat, China emerged as the EU’s biggest honey importer last year with nearly 80 thousand tonnes or about 40 percent of the EU’s total honey imports. Another major external importer of honey in the EU is Ukraine – nearly 40 thousand tonnes or 20% of imports, as well as Argentina – 25 thousand tonnes, Mexico – 21 thousand tonnes and Chile – 8 thousand tonnes.

In 2018, Hungary exported 20 000 tonnes of honey to other EU Member States, or 14 % of total EU domestic honey exports. This makes Hungary the largest exporter of honey within the EU.
