Bulgaria is a traditional honey producer and does not import large quantities, but last year imports fell by about 30% in the first 11 months of the year. In terms of deliveries from third countries, the year-on-year decline was 31.5%.

This was announced by Agriculture Minister Desislava Taneva in response to a question about the state of the beekeeping sector in Bulgaria, published in the National Assembly’s registry.

The main importers of honey from third countries are China and Ukraine. Last year, imports of Chinese honey shrank by 36 per cent between January and November, while Ukrainian imports increased by 19.2 per cent.

In total, in 2019, for which the complete information is available, 1.7 thousand tonnes of honey were imported into Bulgaria, of which 672 tonnes from EU countries and 1.03 thousand tonnes from third countries. The main importers of honey from the EU are Poland, Romania, Germany and Greece.

Last year, the average price of imported honey fell by 4% to BGN 3,856 per tonne, excluding value added tax (VAT), duty and transport costs. This is mainly due to cheaper honey from third countries.

The data show that imports from the EU are at a price of BGN 5060 per tonne and from third countries – BGN 2967 per tonne. In the first 11 months of 2019, the average price of imported honey in Bulgaria reached BGN 4022 per tonne.
